Roadtrip through Western Washington

posted in: Uncategorized | 9

As we were passing through this part of the state, entering from Astoria over the Megler Bridge to take a ferry from Port Townsend Terminal. We decided to make some stops along the way.
We have been in western washington before but mainly on the coast. This time around we did not go to the ocean at all and we tried to pick some unique, wacky, and new destinations. We definitely wanted to do some sightseeing and get a taste of part of this state and as it is famous for its shellfish we decided clamming was the way to go.

Northwest Carriage Museum

The Northwest Carriage Museum is a very good museum with plenty of variety and carriages from different time periods with different tasks. From business carriages to personal carriages and even carriages that have appeared in films. The most notable and well known among the collection is a carraige that appeared in 1939 Best Motion Picture Winner, Gone With The Wind. There is also a hands on section where you can dress up and take pictures on carriages.

Sucher and Sons Star Wars Shop

This is a perfect place to buy a gift for a loved one or for yourself. The owner of this store is so friendly and is a big Star Wars fan himself. You can find just about everything Star Wars related here. Warning: If you are a Star Wars fan like my daughter is you might want to spend hours here looking at all the cool things you can buy.

Dosewallips State Park & Shellfish Beach North Tidal Area

At Dosewallips beach there are plenty of clams. And it is extremely easy to collect them at this beach. But do not bring a clamming tube because there is a large quantity of oyster and clam shells on the surface. Instead use a clamming shovel or rake and dig out the clams. If the clam shell is open then that means the clam is not in the shell or is dead. Here you can find Manila littleneck clams. The ground during low tides is covered with oysters. Don’t forget to get a shellfish license before collecting any clams. Collecting clams has become one our favorite things to do. We found many apple snails here. We have never seen them before so we were extremely fascinated by them.

We woke up at 5am to collect clams. What a great reason to wake up at 5am. While on vacation we usually always wake up at 5am or 6am. We love to do things early. Nature is most active in the morning or in the evening. We got to see a group of Roosevelt Elk. These are the largest elk species.

Rocky Brook Falls

This is one of the waterfalls that is probably missed by most of the tourist because it is off a dead end road and there is no sign on highway 101 so most people just pass by through to other Olympic destinations. But nevertheless it is a great stop because it is super easy to find, the trail to it is only 0.3 miles and the 229 foot tall waterfall you will enjoy most likely all to yourself.

Located at Brinnon, WA 98320. North of Brinnon. Go west on Dosewallips Road for 3 miles. Once you pass the Rocky Brook Bridge it is located to the right.

Mt. Walker Viewpoint

This is one of those places where the road getting there could be more of an adventure than the destination. The drive is very windy and steep. Once you get to the top of the mountain you will get two completly different view points. Both reachable with a short stroll to them. On one side you see the bays and the island. On the other side you get a view of Olympic National Park. After you are done with taking in the views do not forget to put your car in lower gear on your way down.
