Around Town San Diego

We love exploring San Diego and all it has to offer. There is actually so many things one can do and see while visiting San Diego. One could easily spend a week here.

I came from a very close kite family and recently I learned why our family is so close. I want my children to be close to my husband and I as well as their siblings. After listening to Smarter Faster Better by Charles Duhigg, I learned that a group works best when everyone feels that they can speak up and when members care about how everyone feels. When these two things are present then everyone in the family feels that they have his or her back. I was blessed to be raised in that kind of environment. Our children should be able to voice their opinions and no one person should dominate the conversation. Peter, Esther, and I are reading through Shakespeare’s great plays. We have read Romeo and Juliet and are currently reading Hamlet. We have some very interesting topics form from reading Shakespeare’s great plays. I want to hear their opinions and thoughts and not force my own options on them. We take turns discussing what we got out of what we read. There is no right or wrong answer but rather a process of making sense of what we just read and what we learned from his great plays.

Liberty Public Market

Whenever you try to get a feel for the city it is always a great idea to start with its public market. What I mean by that is something that is opened everyday and you can go in there and get some food or buy some accessories. This market can not compete with the best markets out there. It doesn’t matter what taste you’re looking for because I’m almost sure you will find it here. There are over twenty seven artisan venders to choose from. The great thing is that it is opened every single day of the week. We enjoyed Argentinian food for lunch and had Parana Empanadas. They offer ten different varieties of Empanadas and seven of these are vegetarian. What we really enjoyed is that it is a bit farther away from all the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and all the touristy places but at the same time it is much more than we expected.

Tuna Harbor Dockside Market

If you love seafood you’ll want to come here. If you simply like to see unique fish, crab, clams, snail, and a variety of different fish then this is one place to do it at. Most of the locals come to buy fresh seafood here. If we lived nearby we would buy some of their seafood and we would do a unit study out of it with our children. Everyone is so friendly and kind here and I was able to ask all kinds of questions about the fish we saw here. I got to hold a spider crab. They also have food you can get from the Loaf & Fish. We got 2 tacos and it was so good.

Old Town Street Fair

If your anywhere near old town San Diego on a saturday you might want to check out this street fair with photographers and artists showcasing and selling their works of art. Here you will also find venders selling Mexican souvenirs. Other venders selling tidied tee-shirts and San Diego souvenirs and memorabilia. We strongly suggest you grab a cup of friuit with limes and salt and walk around and see all that they have to offer.

GoCar San Diego

A very unique and fun way to explore the city in a two seater car that is an Orange convertible. Also each one of these cars comes with a GPS system so you can choose the route you want to take. As you take in the sights of the city, which is really nice because you can listen to the radio telling you where to go instead of looking at the map yourself, you will get the whole wind in your face type of feeling. As you drive the GPS is programed to tell you the history of the area and what you are passing by.  But i have to warn you, when your rolling in one of these rides you get to feel famous. You will have complete strangers staring, pointing, and taking videos of you. And I suggest that you just wave and enjoy the ride.

Hodad’s

I’m not a big fan of burgers. My husband on the other hand loves them so I gave Hodad’s burgers a try since they are considered to have the best burgers in the world. I was so surprised how juicy and big the burger actually was. I don’t think I ever had attempted to eat a burger that big. I should have got the mini burger. The place is covered in stickers and license plates. There is sure a lot to look at while you wait for your burger to be made.

That little GOcar is so friggen’ cute! I’d feel like I was a kid again, well maybe a teenager. Is the harbor behind you the ocean? I know so little about San Diego or California. I’d wait til late at night just before turning into my hotel for dinner and have that burger and onion rings from Hodads it looks yummy. Okay so I’d eat half.

I was born in San Diego (the Navy base in Oceanside, actually!) but since we only spent 1 or 2 years there, I didn’t really get to know it. I would love to go back and rediscover that part of me.
