You will not find the State of Jefferson on the map of the united states but many locals call this part of northern California, The state of Jefferson. Jefferson is a state that is being proposed in parts of Oregon and California. And to my surprise I learned that it began in 1941. However, only recently it has became a hot topic in all the counties near who want to be apart of it or who oppose it. To us this part of northern California is one of our favorite places to get away for the weekend because of its wide and opened spaces. This quite part of California has so much to offer and once you are here you will be very surprised that these beautiful places are not overrun by tourist and tour buses. Whether it be called California or The State of Jefferson, you will always find it to be a great adventure state where you explore caves, chase waterfalls, watch wildlife, hunt, or fish.
Shasta Caverns
Shasta Caverns is a network of caves that are made of limestone. It was discovered in 1878. Today you can safely enter this cave (with a guide of course) and enjoy yourself. The formations are impressive and we found the guide to be very informative. To get to this cave you will first take a boat over Lake Shasta. The lake is so beautiful. Then you will get on a bus which takes you to the caves entrance. It sure is an adventure just to get to the cave which makes this cave experience extra special.

McArthur-Burney Falls
McArthur – Burney Falls Memorial State Park is the second oldest State Park in California which is indeed impressive considering how many State Parks are in California but why was this one chosen before so many others? This water fall falls from many different spots and not only where you usually find it on pictures, in fact it continues to fall in the form of smaller falls as you walk beside the river. This water fall is so impressive that Theodore Roosevelt considered it to be the eighth wonder of the world.

Mountain Meadows Reservoir
Mountain Meadows Reservoir offers a very scenic drive when going to this lake and it seems to be a very desolate destination. There are many fish here but since we decided to take our canoes and kayaks and we went to the part of the lake that is more shallow with lots of seaweed we decided not to even try fishing. There is a lot of wildlife here such as birds. It is very peaceful here.
Biscar Wildlife Management Area
Biscar Wildlife Area is the place to hunt if you are in Lassen County, CA. There is so much wildlife here such as ducks, rabbits, quail, geese, pheasant, and more. There is plenty of scenery to enjoy while hunting and even if you don’t hunt this is a good place to go birdwatching. This is one of my favorite places in the world because it is so beautiful here and we usually always have the entire place to ourselves. We have been coming here a few times each year for more than 6 years now. My husband prefers this place over the Sacramento Valley Refuge. You see, Sacramento Valley Refuge is crowded with so many hunters and Biscar Wildlife is not. We are usually the only ones here.
Located 35 miles from northeast of Susanville. Take highway 395 north. Turn left on Karlo Rd. Travel on Karlo Rd for about 20 miles.
Crater Lake
Crater Lake, CA is a great place to fish and canoe. It is never very crowded here. We always catch trout here. It is a great place to fish and this is one of our favorite places. We have come here for years. However, this was the first time that we were actually on the lake because usually we fish off the shore. If you want to see fall colors then this place is perfect for that. It was a bit chilly here so bring layers with you.
